Marco 'MAL' Loprieno was born in Pisa (Italy) in 1957. He has been living and working in Brussels (Belgium) for more than 20 years. Always passionate about improvised music and its social implications mal plays saxophones, flutes and clarinets but also bird calls, toys and electronics. Completely self-taught on music he has studied saxophone with the late free-jazz musician Noah Howard. Marco founded and runs in brussels, along with Pat Lugo, the cultural association exit_lab (experimental international transit). exit_lab holds regular concerts and performances of improvised music.
Marco is a member of the brussels-based INaudible collective where he also served as president in 2002-3. He regularly participated in the Sons Libérés festival organised by INaudible in Brussels. Since many years he collaborates in a duo with Johan Vandermaelen (sound engineer, electronics, sound artist). He founded several groups, the most recents being bio_trio and wabi_sabi along with Pat Lugo (voice), Dararat Chemnasiri (alto sax), Richard Herzog (electric bass) and Eric Mersch (guitar).
In 2012 he founded with Pat Lugo the cultural association Memento Mari, dedicated to raising awareness through improvised music and performance art on the drama of migrants trying to reach Europe. In the same year, he composed the suite Berluscophonia, a basis for improvisation using speeches of silvio b. Berluscophonia was performed on several occasions in Belgium and Italy. In september 2014, he participated with the Memento Mari quartet (Mal, Pat Lugo, Guy Strale and Christian Vasseur) to the event 'Lampedusa in festival' on the island of Lampedusa.
